What exactly does the JRE test, and why does passing not guarantee an interview? The Joint Recruitment Examination (JRE) is the designated written test for grades such as Administrative Officer (AO) and Executive Officer (EO): three hours, one Chinese and one English analytical-writing paper, and a major screening gate in the recruitment process. Both papers assess two core competencies at once — analysis (understanding the issue, unpacking the controversy, reaching a grounded judgement) and writing (structure, coherence, accuracy and persuasiveness). After a pass, each grade still shortlists interview candidates by results, applicant numbers and vacancies. Facing a contentious topic with barely any reference material, could you produce a well-structured, clearly argued essay under time pressure? The JRE Chinese paper usually centres on a controversial social or current-affairs issue, argued mainly from your own knowledge — a test of issue preparation, logic and written expression. A clear framework is the key to starting fast: the five-part structure of introduction, supporting points, counter-arguments, judgement and conclusion defines the issue and states your stance, develops your reasons, engages the other side, then delivers an overall judgement and closes the loop. Preparing for the JRE: Argumentation, Time Management and Pitfalls
You have views and material — so why does the essay still lack persuasive force, and why does time always run out? One core competency in the Chinese paper is argumentation: weighing both sides and backing a clear judgement with evidence, neither one-sided nor fence-sitting, but acknowledging complexity and showing why one position stands firmer. At the same time, three hours must cover both papers, leaving the Chinese essay a tight window where misallocated time or careless errors can sink strong arguments.
