The CRE runs limited sittings each year and the BLNST has its own separate results release, so discovering in September that either is still outstanding usually means you have already missed that year's window. The 2026/27 cycle: not yet announced
The Civil Service Bureau has not published any 2026/27 registration or exam dates. The estimate below rests purely on the 2025/26 rhythm: if the pattern holds, registration would again open around September with the written exam in late November, though the actual dates could shift either way.
Not official — do not plan around it: every 2026/27 date here is a rhythm-based estimate, not a Bureau announcement. Rely on the latest notices from the Civil Service Bureau and ao-recruitment.gov.hk, and never book leave or other tests against a forecast date.

Working backwards: milestones from the deadline
Treat the registration deadline as the finish line and work backwards, since both the CRE and BLNST must already be secured before you apply — the real preparation window is shorter than the "September to November" that appears on the surface. The milestones below are planning checkpoints, not a day-by-day study schedule.
Milestone one: pass both CRE language papers and the Aptitude Test. The most time-consuming prerequisite — best cleared before registration opens.
Milestone two: pass the BLNST (degree/professional level). Sittings run more frequently, but still need lead time for results — don't stack it against the CRE.
Milestone three: start timed answer practice. Once the three prerequisites are cleared, put remaining time into answer frameworks for both papers and building a stock of issue knowledge.
Results, review, and the pre-application checklist
Unlike the CRE, the JRE does not produce an electronic result certificate. The recruiting grades notify applicants whether they have been selected for interview for the posts they applied for. Passing the JRE does not guarantee an invitation: each grade shortlists by that cycle's results, applicant pool and vacancies. A request for review must be emailed to the Civil Service Examinations Unit within 7 calendar days from the notification of whether the applicant is invited to interview.
About the rumoured thresholds: figures such as a "400-point total" or an "AO interview cut-off around 203" circulate among private tutoring providers. These are unofficial estimates — the Civil Service Bureau has never published a marking scheme or score threshold.
Before applying, check off the following rather than assume you qualify:
A bachelor's degree, or you are in the final year of one
Level 2 or above in both CRE Use of English and Use of Chinese
A Pass in the CRE Aptitude Test
A Pass in the BLNST (degree/professional level)
